Help Yourself | TechiGrandma is a great believer in the bootstrap theory, the "teach 'em to fish" theory. If you are interested in creating your own print materials or websites, even if you have never done anything like this before, this page is for you. Here we offer links to pages that offer interesting, well-designed templates or to sites that offer "site creation" software. We also suggest some ways to create print materials, like brochures, cheaply and easily. We let you know whether you are in for a steep or gentle learning curve. In the end, though, your success depends a lot on your own personality and tolerance level. Sometimes it is better if you can accept "good enough" rather than strive for "perfect". As always, of course, TechiGrandma is here to help if the whole world of website or print creation either does not interest you or is just too much for your current plate. We can work out an economical path toward your site, with Grandma doing the dirty work, if you prefer. |
| Open Source website help Some of the best website designs are open source. This means they are FREE but it means more than that. It means that intrepid designers who care about design more than money are offering their expertise to you. In return they ask that you give them credit, reveal who designed the template, in little letters at the bottom of the page. They ask it but do not demand it. Grandma says it's the right thing to do. Here are some good sites for open source website templates: - Open Web Design: over 2,000 designs by hundreds of designers. Such a wonderful variety of clean design. Easy to download. Also offers a forum and occasional web design contests.
- Open Source Web Design: Another site with hundreds of beautiful designs, easy to browse and download. This site appears to have been neglected for a while, though, as there are no recent designs here. Still worth review.
- CSS Tinderbox: a selection of basic CSS-based pages that can be modified easily. A really nice site for basic layouts, clean and easy to use.

Print help Depending on your level of ambition, you can either get the software and create your own print designs with it, and then choose your printer, or you can go directly to an online print site that will help you design your print product. Here are a few suggestions: Print Shop: Broderbund has been making Print Shop since the earliest personal computers came on the market. Granny fondly remembers churning out birthday banners with her Commodore 64 and making birthday cards that coordinated with the banners. This handy program features dozens of designs for everything from a greeting card to a website that you can simply modify by changing words or colors, and also offers help if you want to design your product from scratch. Unlike more powerful (and immensely more complicated) programs like Adobe Illustrator or InDesign, Print Shop is easy to learn and limits your choices so you don't get bogged down. You can knock out perfectly respectable (or not respectable if that's what you want) products in minutes. Print Shop is also very reasonably priced: the current version is selling right now for $21.50 (normally $29.99). A reliable program that can get you through some tough spots. Microsoft Office Publisher: A bit more advanced than Print Shop, Publisher is also easy to learn and use and offers many templates plus the opportunity to design it yourself. It's a bit more flexible so you may spend a little more time getting onto it. Because Publisher is part of the MS Office family, it integrates with Excel and Word and other Office products, expanding its capability. If you want to get a little more serious and yet still have a program that is easy to learn, Publisher should be the one. You can download a trial version for free. The newest version is not yet available for sale. You can find older versions inexpensively, however. VistaPrint: This online printer offers many specials on most types of print jobs. You can get yourself some free business cards or tri-fold brochures or holiday cards, or sticky notes or just about anything else, depending on the season. Grandma ordered business cards for this business, sticking with only the free options (custom options all cost money) and she's happy with what she got. The big caveat: VistaPrint gets you on the way out. Shipping charges are ridiculous. So if you are needing your print product in a day or two you might do better to go to your local printer and pay the price. But if you can wait, choose the cheapest shipping option and you'll come out ahead, especially if you load up, purchase several products at once. VistaPrint tries to con you into choosing a more expensive shipping option by estimating really long waits for the cheaper options, but Granny has found that usually you will get your order much sooner than the estimated time. The plus: you can design your item online and it will probably look just fine; there are many designs from which to choose. If you design your product using Print Shop or another software package you pay more to get it printed (you'll also want to check the format that VistaPrint accepts: if you use PDFCreator (see our tips page) you can convert just about any format into pdf and send that to VistaPrint) but you can take it through to the end and then decide if you actually want to pay the money. | Other help Sites that offer web design tools of various types and capabilities: - Windows Office Live: Get Office Live Basics here. Sign up and get a free website, including domain name. Web-based site design software is easy to use and creates a professional-looking site. TechiGrandma is developed through this source. There does not appear to be a "preview" option for Office Live basics: when you create a page it is instantly available, which means you should be prepared to develop at least a skeleton of the page right then.
- OtisWorks Site Builder: A personal plug: TechiGrandma has an interest in OtisWorks. (OtisWorks is a reseller for GoDaddy - of course you can find similar products on godaddy.) Click on "build a website" to choose the product that works best for you. TechiGrandma is familiar with "Website Tonight" in particular. This tool, like the Windows Office Live product above, allows you to build a site online, fairly simply. It doesn't work as well, in Grandma's opinion, as Office Live, but there are more options for varying the templates. Website Tonight offers a "coming soon" page that can be installed immediately while you work up your whole site. After you have developed and previewed your site, you can then upload it all at once.
- My store: I have put together a number of books and other materials that I recommend in my techigrandma store. Take a look!
