| TechiGrandma's History The firm's founder and primary techie is Judy Lautner. She has been around the block a few times. Her first computer was a Commodore 64, which she and her daughters enjoyed thoroughly, although she encountered a certain amount of snobbery from various computer types when she mentioned it. She also thinks back to those days in college when she took a class or two in Fortran, where she had to write programs on punch cards and run them through a monster computer, only to find that there was an error in the programming and she would have to return the next day to run the corrected program. These are not pleasant memories and we regret to say that Ms. Judy did not take any more computer courses and instead obtained a degree in mathematics. Ms. Judy has worked in many fields. She has worked in college libraries as an assistant, has done the bookkeeping for a vending machine operation, drew plans and organized resources for her father's architectural office, worked as a keypunch operator, drew parcel maps for a small engineering firm, and then landed in the field of city planning. Throughout her many years as a drafting technician and planner, Ms. Judy has mastered many different computer programs, primarily related to office work and graphic communication. In addition to her affinity for things techie, Ms. Judy has developed both her writing and her photographic skills. Ms. Judy has earned money on her own by writing articles for the local papers and by creating websites, but only in 2006 did she decide to open TechiGrandma, to share with the wider world her unusual blend of talents. | |
TechiGrandma's work
A few examples of Grandma's work. Websites using templates: Creating websites from scratch is time-consuming and expensive for the client. There are several different types of templates out there, however, that can be modified to suit just about anyone's needs. We include in the term "templates" those web-based programs, like Godaddy.com's "website tonight" and Microsoft Office Live, that allow you to choose from a limited number of templates and that do most of the work for you, all online. Other templates are available just for use in specific editing programs, like Dreamweaver. There are, fortunately, many fine designers who love to share their work and make it available for free. One particularly good site is Open Source Web Design. TechiGrandma enjoys using the better templates or template systems for these reasons: - No fretting about coordination of parts. The designer has worked out the details.
- Much faster to put together or change a site entirely. Much cheaper for you.
- There is an inherent distance between techigrandma and the original designer; hence grandma is not as sensitive about whether her client likes the design or not.
- TechiGrandma learns from using the work of others; it makes her a better designer too.
